How do high protein levels affect bladder health?

Can high protein dog food cause a urinary tract infection?

If your dog or cat has a urinary tract infection, you may be wondering if high protein food has contributed to that health condition.

There currently is not a lot of evidence pointing to high protein in your dog's diet as a direct cause of urinary tract infections. However, having a lot of protein in their diet can change the acidity of your dogs urine. That is, dogs that have a high level of protein in their diet tend to have more acidic urine.

When a dog's urine is very acidic, they're more likely to form bladder stones. The problem is that when a dog forms bladder stones, these bladder stones make it more likely that they will develop urinary tract infections. If your dog has bladder stones, they will tend to have cloudy urine or smelly urine.

Is lavender good for dogs?

Medicine garden plants for dogs are safe for them to nibble on. These herbs provide health benefits to your dogs whenever they decide to chew on a leaf or two.

All the garden plants that are toxic should be avoided. Your dogs can use safe plants to self medicate.

If a dog is feeling slightly distressed or emotionally upset, they can usually identify an herb that will help and can chew on a bit of it in order to feel more of a sense of comfort.

Dogs and several other animals are good at self medicating. This means that your dog will use their senses to find the plant that they may need at a particular time.

If you have already observed a dog nibbling on grass whenever they feel ill, it's self medication in progress. By having a variety of plants in your garden, your dog can select the one that is best for their needs at a particular moment.

Mint is a good plant to have in a sensory garden for dogs. Mint as you already know is popular among humans because it helps to calm the stomach. Many people drink mint when they're feeling nauseous.

Similarly, lavender also helps human beings to feel more relaxed at times when they're under stress. It has the same effect on your dog so it can be included in your sensory garden.

Should dogs with congestive heart failure be given distilled water?

Your veterinarian may sometimes recommend that you give your dog distilled water. This will sometimes happen in cases where your dog has a chronic condition such as congestive heart failure.

Dogs, cats and other pets with chronic conditions like these usually benefit from changes in their diet. Your veterinarian will recommend specific changes in their intake of salt, potassium, phosphorus and other nutrients if they have congestive heart failure.

Dogs with congestive heart failure tend to retain water, sodium and chloride. Diuretics are often given to dogs with congestive heart failure in order to remove fluid build up around the heart. This alleviates pressure on the heart.

However, if your dog is drinking water that contributes to higher levels of sodium and chloride your veterinarian may recommend that you switch to distilled water. Giving your dog drinking water that's low in sodium should be done along with putting your dog on a diet that is low in salt  (sodium chloride).

Helping a dog to strengthen their muscles

There are several reasons why people might want to obtain muscle support for dogs. This may be necessary for dogs as they grow older and a contributing factor to muscle deterioration is that they tend to exercise less than a puppy would.

Dogs that work in specific fields also need to stay in peak condition. For example, dogs in the police force or private security companies need to always be ready for potentially strenuous physical activities.

It's important for you to supply your dogs with sufficient amounts of protein each day. Their veterinarian can recommend the quantity that's appropriate for their breed, age and working conditions.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants also help to support healthy muscle tissue. Some supplements also contain plant-based sources of protein such as kelp which are rich in amino acids.

Cat Energy Food

Cats require essential nutrients if they're to live a healthy life. Your cat's diet must consist of protein.

Protein is broken down into amino acids. When your cat's body has what it requires for all of its essential needs, it uses excess protein for energy.

Your cat also requires fat for energy but this should not be given to them in excessive amounts. Cats can also utilize carbohydrates although they don't need carbohydrates in their diet.

All cats need to have a diet that  give them essential amino acids to rebuild muscle, support heart health and for other purposes.

How do you know if your cat has CHF?

Cat CHF symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for symptoms of other illnesses. It is important to take your cat to the veterinarian if you notice that they always seem to be struggling fro breath or always seem to be tired.

Cats with CJHF generally start to take in more than 60 breaths a minute, as they struggle to pull in more oxygen so that more can reach their body's cells. Instead of relying on regular nose breathing, they may breathe through their mouth.

Your holistic veterinarian may talk to you about natural diuretics for cats that can help cats with CHF, along with prescription medication.
